What Do Punxsutawney Phil and Chirping Birds Tell Us About The Mercies of God?

Happy Groundhog Day!

Today is February 2nd and that means that we will learn our fate for the next six weeks. Either Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow, dart back in his hole, and doom us to more winter or he will come out and play and usher in a nice early spring.

Regardless of what happens with Phil, it is cold today where I am.

Winter is like that.

The leaves are off the trees.  It stays dark later in the morning.  It gets dark earlier in the evening.  The sun may still shine each day, but it doesn’t chase away the cold.

I’m not sure what Punxsutawney Phil has in store for us today, but I know what God has planned.

When I got up this morning I heard an amazing sound.

The birds outside were chirping and singing their song.

It was a wonderful reminder to me that no matter how dark or cold things might seem, morning is a time of renewal; a time of hope.  Each new day brings newness and potential.

God's Mercies are New Each Day

His mercies are new each morning

In Lamentations 3:22-23 it reminds us of this:

The faithful love of the Lord never ends!
    His mercies never cease.
Great is his faithfulness;
his mercies begin afresh each morning.

This morning it didn’t matter that the temperature was cold and that the leaves had fallen of the trees.  The birds were chirping anyway.

There is a lesson there for us.

3 Ways to live out God’s new mercies each day

Thank God in prayer

I often start my day with the following prayer:  Thank you God for the beat of my heart and the breath in my lungs.  Just fifteen words, but they say so much. Without God’s sustaining hand on my life I wouldn’t even be here.  I like to acknowledge that I woke up this morning.  I may not know what each today will bring, but because of his mercies I can be sure that it is a day filled with potential and opportunity.

Start your day with a thankful heart in prayer and see if you see the day differently.

Seek God in the Word

The Bible is an incredible book of hope.   It is God’s love letter to you.  When you start your day in the Word it has a way of helping you put the right things first. You tend to seek things that are important to God and see others through his eyes.

The Bible is also a book of encouragement.  When you get feeling down you can find encouragement in God’s word.  Mine it for words that will help lift you out of your funk.  Take heart that what it says is true.  Trust that God will be with you and carry you through your day.

Live for God in your life

If God’s mercies are new each morning then you should live for him today.   You should also treat others with mercy just as God shows you mercy.

Make today a day where you see others with compassion and share grace with them.  Try to be a kind and gentle person.  Share with those around you  the love of God that is in you.

Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

No one knows what tomorrow will bring.  Some of you may not wake up.  I may not wake up.

You need to live each day with thankfulness and hope.  Even in the darkest situations, God loves us.

Jesus died to show us that.

Each day that the sun rises and you feel your heart beating and you take in breath, remember that God’s mercies are new each day.

Today is a new day.

How will you choose to live it out?

  • That’s one of the most comforting verses in the Bible which I always hold on to when things aren’t going well. God’s mercy is new every morning. It’s not what’s just left of the day before. It’s new! Ah. What a God! #bloggercare
